Pick It Up!

Get Fit Quick Tip:

Pick It Up!

…your exercise intensity, that is! Increase the intensity of your cardio for more of a challenge.

Here’s how to increase your exercise intensity for more of a cardiovascular challenge: (Always consult your physician before beginning exercise.)

Add in 10 second- 2 minute sprints to your cardio workout.

Add in plyometrics or full body body-weight exercises.

Vary the terrain. Hit the stairs, trails or stadiums for a high intensity challenge.

Reduce rest time in between sprint cardiovascular intervals.

Train your Mind.

Get Fit Quick Tip:

Train your Mind.

Doubts about meeting your fitness goal? Normal. Unsure you’ll be able to keep up with your exercise program? Understandable. Anxious about your physical capabilities? Common. The answer is in training your mind by adopting a regular workout mantra. A mantra uses positive thinking to empower your mind, and in turn your body. Improving your mental fitness takes specificity and repetition, and is well worth the effort. Harness your mental power and strength by practicing just a few minutes throughout your day. Here’s how it works:

A mantra should begin with “I am…” or “I have…” For example, “I am a strong, steady and powerful runner.” Choose a sentence or phrase that includes your personal power words, and uses vocabulary in the present tense as if you’ve already reached your goal.  Recite your mantra regularly during your workout and during your day in general. Your mantra will act to silence the negative self-talk, and re-focus your efforts. Consider your mantra as your mental fitness program.

Connect with Others to Ramp Up Workout Motivation

Get Fit Quick Tip:

Connect with Others.

If you’re struggling with exercise motivation, connect with others who are also on your fitness journey. For example:

Take a fitness class. Look up the class schedule at your gym. Do an internet search for classes in your town. Visit your local community recreation center. Nothing is more inspiring than exercising along side of others who share in your journey to fitness.

Form a team. Is there a walk, run or bike ride in your town to raise funds and awareness for a cause that’s near and dear to your heart? SIGN UP! Recruit friends, family, neighbors, co-workers to join your team. Making a commitment to a team gives a deeper meaning and focus to your fitness. You’re less likely to miss a workout when others are counting on your participation.

Volunteer! Give back to get motivated. Volunteer for an athletic event in your town. From volunteering to hand out race numbers, to filling cups at a water stop, to working clean-up at a local athletic event, there is a volunteer opportunity for everyone. Simply ASK! Focusing on helping and encouraging others will inspire your fitness. Watching others cross their finish line will increase motivation to find yours as well.

Back to the Basics by David Hutchings

Train well, eat well, recover well. Follow these three themes and you’ll be on your way to reaching your fitness goals.  Sometimes people get bogged down in the details before getting the basics right.

The information floating around makes it difficult to even identify the basics.

Firstly, nutrition.  Eat for your goal.  It’s that simple (theoretically).  If you want to lose weight, you need to eat fewer calories than you burn. Before you worry about supplements, fat burners or meal timing answer this: are you eating fewer calories than you burn through daily activity?  There are many apps that can tell you the amount of calories you should be eating to lose weight.  They’ll also help you track your food.  Get one and start tracking – then you’ll know whether you’re eating the right amount of calories.

Next, training.  You can lose weight by diet alone, but you’ll also lose muscle along with the fat which isn’t ideal.  This is where training comes in.  Training burns calories, but the right training will minimise muscle loss too.  Doubly beneficial. Having more lean muscle means you burn more calories just going about your daily life.  It also means you’ll have more muscle tone once the fat is burned off.

Lastly, recovery.  Watching your nutrition and training appropriately are vital, so is recovery.  You need rest so the body can prepare itself for the next day of training and eating well. Losing weight is stressful to the body in terms of training and being in a caloric deficit.  It’s also stressful on the mind.  Setbacks are frustrating and can take a toll mentally so ensure you are getting your rest.

If you’re trying to lose weight but haven’t been successful ask yourself this – am I eating, training, and recovering well?  Chances are if one of these boxes isn’t being ticked, it could be the reason.

David Hutchings is the owner of 360 Degree Fitness Limited  — a mobile personal and small group training business based in Wellington, New Zealand. He trains a variety of clients from regular folks trying to get a little fitter to athletes looking to increase their speed and strength.
