Health and Fitness Blogs to Follow…continued

Behold, the third in our series…Health and Fitness Blogs to Follow!

The blog New York Views & Nike Shoes found its voice in the Fall of 2013 with Meaghan Ellis. Meaghan explains how her blog came to be, “when I moved to New York, I found myself taking so many pictures of my new city and telling friends and family about all the cool new workout places I was trying, so I decided to put it all down on paper (or, a computer in this case.)”

Meaghan posts about 5 days each week and describes her blogging approach as a “normal persons approach to running.” Check out one of her favorite posts to date, her half marathon race recap from December. She writes about living active and trying new workouts around the big city, New York City.

So who should check out New York Views & Nike Shoes? Meaghan sums it up, “anybody who is even mildly interested in running will be able to relate to my blog. I am not a fast runner, so you’ll read about the trials and tribulations of a slow, but dedicated distance runner.” So whether you’re a fan of fitness or simply a fan of New York City, you’ll find workout-focused posts, inspiring pictures and healthy living motivation to love on New York Views & Nike Shoes!

Does Your Shift Need a Shove?

You swore that this was going to be the year that you dropped 20lbs/changed jobs/started a new career. You really meant it when you said it, too. But somehow, as the days and weeks passed, and as life got in the way, those goals fell by the wayside and nothing has changed.

It’s frustrating when you want things to shift in your life, but you find yourself feeling terribly stuck. The truth is that nothing shifts unless YOU make it shift. Your life requires your participation – and action.

Sometimes, though, if you’ve been stuck for a while, a shift isn’t quite going to cut it. Sometimes, you need a gentle, loving…shove.

3 Ways to Shove Yourself Into Action If You’re Stuck

1. Shout it from the rooftops.

Tell someone. Put it on Facebook. Tweet it. Send out a mass mailing. Whatever feels ‘public’ to you. When you share your goals with other people, you create instant accountability.

2. Choose something else entirely.

If you can’t seem to get started on your goal to stop drinking soda, then perhaps this isn’t the right time for that effort. Rather than force yourself to follow through on something that isn’t meaningful in this moment, why not choose a different goal? Choose something that resonates with who you are and where you are right now.

3. Ask for help!

Enlist a professional. A certified life coach can help you get out of your own way. Sometimes you need someone whose job is to challenge your thinking and encourage your growth. It’s also a GREAT way to stay accountable and banish your excuses.

What are some of your favorite strategies for helping yourself shift gears? Do tell!

Meet your new training partner, RockMyRun!

Looking for an exercise partner? Thanks to RockMyRun you don’t have to look any further than your computer! Since 2012 RockMyRun has been insuring awesome workouts of all kinds through their creative, eclectic and motivating music mixes.

“RockMyRun is different from other music applications because we provide music that is specifically tailored to help runners and other active people better perform and better enjoy their activities” says Founder and Chief Rocker Adam Riggs-Zeigen. “We’ve done hundreds of hours of research with runners to better understand how music impacts their runs and took that knowledge to DJ’s from around the world who publish mixes to our system that best serve the needs of runners” Adam shares.

RockMyRun’s competitive edge lies in the user’s ability to choose their mixes based on their specific criteria. “We allow runners to filter and sort by criteria that’s relevant to them, like BPM, length, clean vs. explicit lyrics, as well as read comments and votes from other runners, making it easy to find great running music” Adam explains. Although designed initially for runners, RockMyRun has enjoyed additional popularity among athletes and fitness enthusiasts everywhere from motivating gym workouts to exercise classes to a wide variety of sports.

RockMyRun offers two categories of memberships: standard and premium. “You can access a lot of RockMyRun for free! Mixes up to 45 minutes in length can be accessed 100% for free from the app. Access to premium mixes ranges anywhere from $4.99 per month to $35.99 per year” explains Adam.

Adam not only talks the talk, but walks the walk. He shares his story, “I spent 10-plus years as a traveling DJ – playing large nightclubs, corporate events, house parties, wedding etc.  When I started training for my first half-marathon about 6 years ago, I decided to put my DJ skills to work and create a mix rather than a playlist.” He continues on “the results were amazing! I found myself more energized, more motivated and it really helped the training fly by.”

Want to run a 2 hour Half-Marathon? Use RockMyRun’s ‘The 2 Hour Half-Marathon‘ as your training partner and pacer with their music mix specifically designed with a consistent beat to get you to the finish line. Or check out their ‘Disco-Dash‘ Mix for a steady beat of 130 per minute, an ideal pace for a mid-week run of 30 minutes. If you want to find your favorite rock songs all in one 30 minutes mix for your gym workout, check out ‘Rock-it Fuel’ and you’ll be cranking out more solid reps than ever before. ‘Dose of Energy’ is another mix that will keep you going strong for 60 minutes as you’ll become energized by House and Pop tunes. With over 15 genres of music represented, you’ll find a mix for every music-interest and every type of workout.

Fan and RockMyRun user, Katy Widrick, a runner and triathlete, explains “I was so excited to find it, since I’m one of those people who not only can’t run without music, but whose workouts are made better by a great beat.” One of Katy’s favorite aspects of RockMyRun is “I love that some of the mixes are free to download, because it lets people get to know the style and flavor before buying. But in general, I think the best aspect is the quality of the mixes — they include great music, really well-done mixes, consistent beats.” Nic Akins, a fellow RockMyRun enthusiast agrees, saying,“it’s a great way to keep you focused and energetic.” Nic continues, “the descriptions are really good in helping you decide what mix will work best for what you want in a workout. Knowing and understanding the BPM (beats per minute) is very helpful.”

Look for more innovation from this cutting edge business. “We’re even more excited about the prospects of building in additional technology into our application and creating truly amazing experiences for runners, cyclists, weight lifters, fitness instructors and active people everywhere” Adam explains.

Feel free to drop Adam an email via adam@rockmyrun.com. Be sure to join their Facebook and Twitter communities for all updates and new mix info! And check out their blog: http://blog.rockmyrun.com/

Choose RockMyRun as your workout partner; you’ll get motivated, get energy and get better workout results with your high-quality, fun, and consistent exercise sessions. No matter what genre you prefer, you’ll find it. From country to classic to reggae to seasonal music, YOUR ideal music mix awaits!

Friendly Competition? By Mollie Millington

Participation in organized races, from 5Ks to half-marathons, has increased tremendously in the last few years.  People now have triathlons on their bucket lists and run marathon to raise much needed funds for charities.

Why should you get involved?

Increases motivation- If you have trouble finding a reason to get up and run in the morning (or after work), a race will give you purpose.  It provides a deadline which will motivate you to train within the time frame allotted.  If you register for a charity team, that is another powerful motivator to complete the race as your donors expect you to do so.

Structures training- When you have a specific distance and/or discipline to work on, your training will need to be tailored.  Working with a coach or personal trainer, they can provide you with a schedule that will take the guesswork out of your preparation.  It makes it easier when you can just hop on a bike or lace up your sneakers without worrying about what you need to do. You will have a time or distance to complete and just need to get it done.

Provides you with a new community- Not all of your friends will understand why you are leaving the party early to get up and run on a Saturday morning. When you befriend other runners in the park or on the track, you will meet like-minded people who know exactly what you are going through. These people enjoy the same thing you do- exercise and competition. They might also be good motivators and mentors in the end.

Improves your fitness- This is a no brainer.  If you start running, swimming, or cycling regularly, you will feel healthier.  This will improve your mood, increase strength, decrease stress, and lower blood pressure.

Sense of pride and achievement- When you have your first medal around your neck, it will be an amazing feeling.  You will think back to when you started and how much you have overcome to cross the finish line.  A smile will be on your face for days.  You will feel unstoppable and ready to register for your next event, and maybe even bold enough to increase the distance.

Registering for a race can be scary but it can also be unbelievable motivation to exercise regularly.  It will help focus your exercise sessions, introduce you to new people, make you fitter, and give you a sense of accomplishment the second you cross the finish line.  If you haven’t done so yet, find a race near you and register today.  Look for a realistic distance and be sure to give yourself enough time to train properly.

Music and Motivation by Zachary Fiorido

Music and Exercise Motivation: 5 Reasons to Crank Up the Tunes!

Music is a great way to stay motivated and accountable to your workouts. It is one of the easiest forms of exercise motivation.  Here are 5 reasons why you should crank up the tunes.

1)    Getting up in the am is a struggle, especially with your annoying alarm clock blaring. Change that to a happy go lucky song that makes you want to dance and you are on your way to waking up excited. Gone are the days of snoozing.

2)    Feeling sad and blue?  Studies have shown that people who listen to music have reduced depression and feelings of pain. Don’t worry, be happy!

3)    When you are feeling tired and unmotivated to exercise, create a special playlist with songs that immediately pick you up. This playlist should only be played once every 2 weeks, that way all songs have a special meaning that makes you want to crush your fitness goals!

4)    Cardio Junkie? Playing upbeat music can actually make you go faster. Select songs with BPM (Beats Per Minute) around 130 to 150 BPM. The faster the song the faster you go! Check out a great app on Itunes called “Tempo Magic Pro” This app allows you to adjust any song to go faster or slower.

5)    Not a music lover? No worries. Try audiobooks and podcasts. You can get motivated and inspired just as much as music through spoken words.

Five Keys to Fitness Motivation! Written by Bob Choat

Many people will struggle in getting motivated to exercise or do any kind of fitness routine. Finding the motivation is the key to getting going. It’s not about getting going in doing the hardcore, sweating to the max workouts either. Each one of us has to find what will motivate us. To begin, true motivation in any endeavor comes from inside, described as intrinsic. In this article I am going to describe five keys that will help you discover your personal motivation.

Here are the Five Keys to Fitness Motivation:

Key #1: Begin with YOUR ‘Reason Why.’  Why is it that you want to get fit and healthy?  Begin by writing down the top 10 reasons that you can think of and then narrow it down to 5 and finally to 3. Now, look at each of the three. Does any one of them feel powerful inside of you? When you imagine it, how does it really feel? When you discover “the one” then use it as your reason why.

Key #2: Set Fitness Goals. I’m sure that you’ve heard this many times. The truth is that it is not a goal when you don’t commit it to paper, prepare a plan of action and then take action. Make sure that each goal is: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely (S.M.A.R.T.)

Key #3: Associate with Fitness-Minded People. We are the sum average of the five people we associate with the most. We are influenced by many people and those we hang with are our biggest influencers at that moment. It is about “trying to fit in” when we make choices, good or bad.

Key #4: Use a Journal. This will help you to record your progress, keep you on track and let you know which specific emotional triggers result in certain behaviors.

Key #5: Make Fitness Fun! Don’t just go to the gym. Take your fitness outdoors. Make it play time. Change up your routines. Go for a hike. Take a martial arts or boxing class. Consider a dance class! Anything that gets you off the sofa and moving consistently can be considered a form of exercise, including gardening.

You may find that simply one of the keys or a combination of the keys will increase your motivation. I wish you a motivated fitness life!

Get Motivated! By Zachary Fiorido

How can I motivate to do cardio?

Have a plan. The first thing to do to get motivated is to have a plan. Most people lose motivation because they think of a couple exercise routines or programs that they need to do but then they start to lose track of the next steps to take due to lack of planning.

Write it down. Grab a pen and a piece of paper and brainstorm. Write down all your fitness goals, aspirations and any little thing that triggers something within you.  Once you have finished this brainstorming, keep it in a safe place and refer back to it when you have run out things to do to keep moving forward.

Break down your goals. Create small, attainable goals that will help set you up for success. Instead of saying you want to lose 30lbs, start with 5lbs. That way when you have reached your 5lb weight loss you are able to celebrate your success. The more goals you achieve the more successes you will have.

Have a motivation back-up. We all have days where we have no motivation to do anything. When this happens, I have a go-to music playlist. I have all my positive songs that put me in a fantastic mood where I can do anything. It could also be a book, or one of your favorite quotes. Whatever it is, know that this is your go-to source for motivation.

Beat Boredom with Out-of-the-Box Exercise by Whitney Orban

This article is brought to you by Kathy Smart. Kathy is a TV nutritionist, host and chef of ‘ Live the Smart Way ~ the world’s first vegetarian and gluten free TV show’ and author of ‘ Live the Smart Way. Check out her website for more information, www.livethesmartway.com.

Beat Boredom with Out-of-the-Box Exercise by Whitney Orban

The windows are open, the sun is shining, and three layers of clothing aren’t required to go outside. Spring is here! What does this mean? Move your workouts outdoors!

If you find yourself making excuses to sleep in or accepting your reasons why it’s okay to cut workouts short, boredom has set in. Sure, when you’re short on time or weather is not cooperating, hitting the gym is a great option. However, if you’re up for a little adventure, try an out-of-the-box-exercise approach!

Embrace Nature. Nature is ever-changing, so it’ll keep you motivated.  Find inspiration in small adventures like taking a jog around town. Simply having the sun on your face, wondering what’s just past that next hill, or watching your dog have fun running along your side will give you energy to keep going. Let’s face it, the view outside almost always beats indoors.

Become an Adventurer. Little adventures will peak your interest to try bigger adventures, like summiting a 14,000’ mountain or taking a trip to Thailand to go rock climbing. Begin with smaller adventures, and allow them to take you to places you’ve never been before. Be open to the excitement adventure brings. Who knows, you might have so much fun you forgot you were even working out. Planning for adventure also creates a goal to improve fitness and workout adherence. It’s unlikely you’ll skip out on the gym because you’ll be focused to get in shape for the big adventure.

Anything NEW is fair game. Not everyone can hop in their car and arrive at a mountain in a couple hours but each workout outside can still be new and exciting. Drive a few hours and take a hike, visit your local park and go for a bike ride, sign-up for a rock climbing class, you might be surprised at what is in your own backyard.

Whitney Orban moved to Colorado from Florida in 2007 and immediately fell in love for the mountains. Follow her adventures on www. bradleysadventures.wordpress.com
