Build your Fitness this Winter by Nicole Bryan

You’re hearing the murmurings and mumblings…winter is coming.  Take advantage of the “off-season”, and wait out winter by trying group exercise classes. Prepare for spring and outdoor athletics now with fun indoor group exercise. Always consult your physician before beginning exercise.

Indoor cycling classes. Group indoor stationary cycling classes have become main stay at most fitness facilities. For your first class, you’ll be met by the instructor who will offer a proper bike fit. There are varying adjustments on the bikes and it’s important that the bike fits appropriately for an effective workout. You’ll try moves like standing hill climbs, seated climbing and sprints. Indoor cycling classes are useful for those interested in learning proper cycling form, as well as picking up some fun drills to transfer to your riding on the road. You’ll finish with a cool down and a stretch; always a useful reminder of productive stretches to do after every ride.

Suspension training. Suspension workouts involve using body weight as resistance. Offered through classes with an instructor you’ll be guided through a workout involving pushing and pulling movements at various angles. This type of training is a great workout for total body strength. The workout requires to use your muscles how you use them in every day function, in groups and in patterns. It also challenges your posture muscles, as it requires holding your body straight.

Pilates mat classes. Mat classes lead by an instructor offer a super effective floor based workout. This takes an everyday abdominal workout way beyond endless crunches. You’ll learn what everyone means when they refer to the “core,” and more than that…you’ll feel every muscle in the core! Even more important is you’ll learn tricks of the trade to do daily as you’re going about your day to engage and strengthen your muscles. Mat classes are not only a workout, but an education as to how your body works.

Boot camp classes. If your warm weather outdoor hobby or sport involves upper body strength like kayaking or paddle boarding, check out a boot camp style class. Usually a fast paced circuit format class, you won’t even have a chance to look at your watch! Squat down, jump up, sprint forward, side shuffle to your right are just a few of the moves you’ll repeat. What tends to be a high intensity workout, you’ll strengthen not only every muscle in your upper body and lower body, but your heart as well. The camaraderie is what many report as their favorite benefit of boot camp style classes. The creative moves which require every ounce of concentration, along with the constant challenging hustle and bustle keeps motivation high.

Start building your springtime sport and hobby fitness base now by taking advantage of indoor exercise classes. Group fitness classes may be just the way to go; you’ll pick up workout tips, discover new drills applicable to your outdoor spring and summertime hobby, and maybe even meet a new training buddy or two. You’ll enter spring stronger, leaner and way ahead of the game!

Spring Clean your Fitness by Nicole Bryan

Spring cleaning not only applies to your household, but to fitness as well. Purging outdated and worn out equipment will leave you refreshed and inspired to start anew. Look into selling slightly used equipment to second-hand shops, recycling materials or swapping equipment with a friend.

Exercise Bands and Elastic Tubing. If they have any cracks, tears or holes in the tubing, replace them. Don’t forget to check the handles as well for any frayed material or glue wearing thin.

Stability Ball. If there are any changes in color, replace it. Make sure the ball is inflated so your hips are level or slightly higher than your knees. Visually inspect the seams as well for any changes or wearing thin.

Bar Accessories. Make sure your collars for free-weights are intact and remain tight.

Cables. If you have a pulley system or in home exercise machine, inspect the cables and housing. If they’re not tracking smoothly, they’ll alter the movement. Time to schedule maintenance.

Balance Disks and Foam Pads. If you’re using balance challenging tools inspect them often for irregularities or small puncture, cracks or tears in the fabric or material.

Exercise Mats and Pads. Edges curl up, traction wears thin; both are hazards and increase your chance of your foot catching the edge and falling.

Foam Rollers. Check for wear and tear or losing their shape or edges.

Shoes. Most guidelines recommend exercisers replace shoes every three to four months depending on the amount of activity. When miles and minutes are equal, high impact exercise, such as running will require you to replace shoes more frequently than low impact exercise such as walking. It may also be time to replace shoes if you are participating in a new activity. For example, if find yourself hiking often in your tennis shoes. Ask for help finding appropriate shoes for your activity. Doing so will decrease your chance of injury.

Your Kinesiology Taping Solution

If you suffer from muscle or joint pain, post-exercise fatigue or nagging injuries, there is help. Your answer is simply one click away. Meet Theratape.com!

Theratape is the leading online supplier of kinesiology tape, the colorful tape that can now be seen at virtually every major sporting event, as well as physical therapy clinics, chiropractic offices and training rooms. Since its debut at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, kinesiology tape has taken both the sports world and the therapy world by storm and is showing no signs of slowing down. This popularity is understandable when you consider that an expenditure of $10-$20 can purchase a product that can provide round-the-clock relief from pain and inflammation for up to 5 days, as well as accelerate the healing process.

Joanne Stapensea, M.Sc., an exercise physiologist and owner of Theratape.com says the benefits of kinesiology taping are many, with the user often experiencing relief and improved function almost immediately. Health and fitness experts agree. Using kinesiology tape can:

Speed Workout Recovery. Whether you work out a few times a week or participate in competitive multi-day athletic events, recovery is key! K-taping increases circulation to those working muscles, which means that more oxygen and nutrients are being delivered and more exercise byproducts like lactic acid are being removed.  The result? Less residual fatigue and muscle soreness and a faster return to peak performance levels.

Decrease Pain. Whether it’s a fresh injury or a chronic muscle or joint ache, kinesiology taping can help relieve the pain. The stretchy tape lifts the skin just enough to reduce pressure on sensitive pain receptors, providing drug-free relief the entire time it is worn.

Keep You Active. Because it provides pain relief and support without restricting range of motion, k-tape can allow people with injuries to continue to train and/or compete as they recover. What could be better than continuing in your sport and healing at the same time?

Correct Muscle Imbalances. Depending on the method of application, kinesiology taping can activate weak/poorly toned muscles or inhibit overactive muscles. This allows it to help correct muscle imbalances and dysfunctional postures that can lead to injuries or performance problems. Better posture means you’re decreasing risk of injury, and working at full functional power!

Wondering how kinesiology tape can do all that? For your own tutorial on how kinesiology tape works click here!

HELLO Spring! By Angelena Riggs

Spring is here, time to take your fitness outside!

Are you feeling bored with your current indoor workouts?  Now that Spring is finally here, it’s time to take your workouts outside for a change.  You can get some sun, have some fun and get a great workout in too.  Ready to head out and burn some calories?

Here are a few ways to get outside:

Take a trail hike:  Find a local State Park that has trails marked for with walking paths.  Trails are a great alternative to treadmill inclines and work your entire lower body!

Do some track sprint intervals: The local high school is a great location to work on your sprints.  Try walking, running, then sprinting in intervals to burn major calories.

Play sports: Grab a friend, your spouse or even your kids for a fun game of tennis or basketball.  Playing sports is a fun way to take your fitness outside while spending time with your loved ones.

Fitness Trail Loop:  There are many parks and trails that offer fitness activities. Some activities include pull up bars, sit-up benches, and monkey bars.  Not sure where to find one, do a quick internet search for one in your area.  This is a fun way to challenge your fitness and try something new.

Get on your Bike: Spring is the perfect time to get your bike out from the rack in your garage and hit the trails. Biking is a great workout and you can ride the sidewalks in your neighborhood or find a local bike trail.  Grab a friend or two and get pedaling.

Whatever activity you choose to do, just get moving.  Spring is the perfect time to take your workouts outside and get your friends and family involved and off the couch.

Is your Fitness Waiting for Spring? By Tera Busker

Staying active in the winter can be daunting. Depending on where you live, it can mean bundling up, getting in a cold car, driving to the gym only to get sweaty and repeat the process back out in the cold. Well, like the old saying goes…”If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” Winter is a reality that we can’t escape. It comes every year and there is no way around that. So instead of fighting the cold and snow, find a way to enjoy it, pass the time and build fitness for Spring.

Find a winter sport. You can find countless places dedicated to snow sports like skiing, skating or snowboarding and you can always find a trail that allows cross country skiing, snowshoeing or hiking. Not only will you get to get outside and enjoy the beautiful views, but you will be getting your heart rate up and getting a great workout.

Join an indoor sports league. Many community ed programs or local gyms have clubs or pickup games like basketball or volleyball that you can join in for free. You’ll be less likely to skip a workout, when a team is counting on you.

Have a goal. Set a fitness or health related goal that you want to reach by Spring. Sign up for a running, walking, biking or swimming event like a 5K or triathlon or enroll in a charity event. Having a long term goal that you are excited about will keep you motivated to workout, eat right and reach your goals.

Make your home your gym! If you just can’t face Old Man Winter or if you get snowed in, have a workout that you can do at home.

Brain Super Foods by Maggie Ayre

The Top Brain Super Foods and a Brain Boosting Recipe

Can you believe it’s nearly spring?  Before we know it the school summer term will be here and children throughout the northern hemisphere will be studying for exams.

Whilst study and revision time is important for securing good grades many experts now agree that what we eat and how much we move also play an important role.

Here are the top three areas of brain super foods:

1.    Healthy oils – foods such as oily fish, avocado, hemp, flax and fish oils contain the omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA which have proven very beneficial to the workings of the brain.  Unfortunately the western diet tends to be very rich in omega 6 fatty acids which the brain makes use of in the absence of omega 3.  It tends to be a bit like a diesel car trying to run on unleaded petrol, OK in the short term but with long term problems developing.
2.    Water – our brains are 75% water.  We must keep them properly hydrated to enable them to work at their best.
3.    Blueberries – these little berries are little power houses of brain goodness.  They are full of healthy antioxidants and packed with vitamin C.  They have been proven to help with memory and cognitive function.

Here’s a Brain Super Food recipe to get you started:

Banana and Peanut Butter Flapjack
Makes about 12

3.5oz/100g organic butter
1.75oz/50g soft brown sugar
1.75oz/50g honey
1 banana – mashed
1.75oz/50g no added sugar crunchy peanut butter
8oz/225g porridge oats

Preheat the oven to 320F/160C.

Melt the butter in a saucepan.  Add the sugar, honey and peanut butter and cook until softened.  Remove from the heat and stir in the banana and porridge oats.

Turn into a greased and lined cake tin.  Push into corners with a spoon.  Bake in the oven for 20 minutes until golden brown.

Mark into rectangles and leave to cool before lifting out.

Let’s face it, kids and especially teenagers, are a hard crowd to please when it comes to preparing meals! As parents, we are inundated with nutrition information regularly, eat this or don’t ever eat this; so how do we know what’s best for our growing children? We rely on science and research.

Here’s what we do know; we do know that there is a link between what we eat and how our brain functions. The author, Maggie Ayre, has done the ground work for you. As the UK’s leading coach for young people, she shares her years of expertise and experience. Ms. Ayres book offers the details why food intake is important for healthy learning for our children. Her book also offers over 30 simple recipes that are sure to please your kids of every age, and improve how their brain functions and absorbs information.

Ms. Ayres explains, “having worked as a Fitness Coach for Teens for five years I am dismayed at the foods many teens are eating.” She shares, “I feel that there is a lack of knowledge of just how important our diet is in all aspects of our lives and particularly the working of our brains, our powers of concentration and our energy levels.” All parents should consider this book a must-have manual full of guidance and resources!

Ms. Ayre’s mission is simple; she says “if we can get young children eating foods that will help them study, we will reap the benefits of better grades throughout their schooling.” Check out all of Maggie’s books on her website at www.maggieayre.com or email her directly at maggieayre@mail.com.

ACCESSORIZE…With a Purpose! Meet B.I.C. Bands

If you’re looking for a great gift idea, look no further! B.I.C. Bands is a business that gives back. They offer non-slip headbands that donate back to local charities with every sale! For example, in February their beneficiary was the American Heart Association, and the Go Red for Women campaign. In March, B.I.C. Bands is supporting the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation.

Founder of B.I.C. Bands, Sandy Pearson, explains the origin of her business, “these amazing headbands started all as a fundraiser for my run with Team in Training.” She continues, “I was looking for a way to raise the necessary funds to run my first half marathon. I had started to make headbands that didn’t slip because I was cheap and crafty~ friends said they’d buy them, so I decided to try my hand at making and selling them.” She adds, “my small little venture began and I started sewing. I donated the profits to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. OVER $1000 was raised through the sale of B.I.C. Bands!”

With over 250 styles available online, there really is a color and design for everyone; print, patterns, sparkles, you name it they’ve got it! Even offering four different widths, all with an absorbent lining that stays on your hair like velcro, without pulling or snagging your hair as with silicone-lined headbands.

Through their customer-service oriented wholesale program, they also offer custom bands for groups or teams. Email them directly at info@bicbands.com for additional details. When asked about the motivation behind her business, Ms. Pearson replies “because B.I.C. Bands were such a hit after my race, I decided to keep making and selling the bands to continue giving back to organizations in need.”
